Astronomers Discover Potential Signs of Alien Life on Distant Planet: 'This is a Revolutionary Moment'

Astronomers Detect a Signature of Life on a Distant Planet

Now a team of researchers is offering what it contends is the strongest indication yet of extraterrestrial life, not in our solar system but on a massive planet, known as K2-18b, that orbits a star 120 light-years from Earth. A repeated analysis of the exoplanet’s atmosphere suggests an abundance of a molecule that on Earth has only one known source: living organisms such as marine algae. “It is in no one’s interest to claim prematurely that we have detected life,” said Nikku Madhusudhan, an astronomer at the University of Cambridge and an author of the new study, at a news conference on Tuesday. Still, he said, the best explanation for his group’s observations is that K2-18b is covered with a warm ocean, brimming with life. “This is a revolutionary moment,” Dr. Madhusudhan said. “It’s the first time humanity has seen potential biosignatures on a habitable planet.”

The best evidence for life outside our solar system just got stronger

Thanks to NASA's powerful James Webb Space Telescope (JWST), astronomers have found the best evidence yet of life on another world outside our solar system. For years, the exoplanet K2-18b has been a top contender with promising signs of life. New research led by the University of Cambridge has found evidence of chemicals within K2-18b's atmosphere that on Earth are produced by marine life, like algae and phytoplankton. K2-18b orbits its parent star within the constellation Leo, 124 light years away, and is more than 2.5 times larger than Earth. This world is known as a "Hycean" planet because it could contain an ocean underworld teeming with life and a hydrogen-rich atmosphere.

Astronomers claim to have discovered major sign of life on distant planet: ‘First hints we are seeing of an alien world’

Astronomers have discovered a major sign of life — and “the first hints… of an alien world” on a distant planet orbiting outside the solar system, according to a new report. The scientists believe the exoplanet, K2-18b, is a “Hycean planet” — meaning it’s home to an abundance of a life-signifying molecules including one that is only produced on Earth by living organisms such as marine algae, according to a new report. K2-18b — which is eight times the size of Earth and 124 light-years away — shows signs of the unique molecule dimethyl sulfide, according to a new study published in the Astrophysical Journal on Wednesday.

Strongest Hints Yet Of Life On A Planet Called K2-18b — What To Know
A team of astronomers led by the University of Cambridge in the U.K. found the chemical fingerprints of dimethyl sulfide (DMS) and/or dimethyl disulfide (DMDS) in the atmosphere of an exoplanet called K2-18b. DMS and DMDS are only produced on Earth by microbial life, such as marine phytoplankton.

We may not be alone in the universe: Astronomers find possible alien life on planet
The discovery was made on a massive exoplanet known as K2-18b that is much larger than Earth but smaller than Neptune. Using observations from NASA’s James Webb Space Telescope, the researchers were able to find possible hints of molecules that on Earth are signs of living organisms like marine algae.

Scientists Find Promising Indication of Extraterrestrial Life—124 Light-Years Away
Astronomers have found one of the most promising indications that there could be extraterrestrial life on another planet. With the help of the James Webb Space Telescope, researchers have detected what they believe could be biosignatures of marine microorganisms on K2-18b. The planet is located in the habitable zone of its parent star 124 light years away.

Scientists find "strongest evidence yet" of life on distant planet K2-18b: "This could be the tipping point"
The planet K2-18b is thought to be at least 124 light years away from Earth. The planet is believed to have a large amount of water in its atmosphere. It could also have life on its surface, as well as other forms of life. The discovery of the planet could be the first evidence of extraterrestrial life.

Is this a hint of life on another world, or just a lot of hot air?
Astronomers have spotted chemical signatures in the atmosphere of a distant planet. The James Webb Space Telescope has the ability to probe planets that orbit far away stars. An ocean world that's teeming with microbes is currently the best explanation for the chemical signatures. The detection of these gases needs to be confirmed, scientists say.

Astronomers Discover Planet With a Tail
BD+05 4868 Ab lies 140 light-years from Earth in the constellation of Pegasus. It has a molten surface that is boiling off material into space, where this cools to form a long, dusty tail. The extent of the tail is gargantuan, stretching up to 9 million kilometers [5.6 million miles]
