Elon Musk says he’ll step back from DOGE starting in May

In a Tesla earnings call, Musk said next month he would continue to “spend a day or two” each week on DOGE matters “probably for the remainder of the president’s term,” but would spend the bulk of his time focused on his electric car company. “Starting next month, I’ll be allocating far more of my time to Tesla, now that the major work of establishing the Department of Government Efficiency is done,” Musk said. He’d continue to support DOGE “for as long as the President would like me to do so, and as long as it is useful.” Musk’s status as head of DOGE has come increasingly under scrutiny, with Tesla investors begging him to step down from the controversial project and focus more attention on Tesla, which is undergoing a major sales slump.

Elon Musk to scale back DOGE work in May as Tesla reports drop in revenue, profits

Tesla CEO Elon Musk on Tuesday told investors that he would dedicate more time to the company next month, and scale back the amount of time he spends on the Department of Government Efficiency (DOGE). The announcement occurred after the company announced that its revenue had dropped significantly in the first quarter of 2025, along with its profits. The company's revenue has plummeted 9% while its profits dropped 71%, according to the Associated Press. The issues come as it struggles to sell vehicles due to protests over DOGE cuts to the federal workforce. The billionaire said he will reduce the amount of time he spends working for the federal government to "a day or two per week," and the rest will be devoted to fixing the electric vehicle company.

Elon Musk Says He Will Step Back From DOGE

Musk’s dual role as Tesla CEO and federal efficiency czar has drawn increasing scrutiny, with some investors voicing concern that his political entanglements are hurting the brand. On the call, Musk said that Tesla had taken “a few bumps in the road” due to his alliance with Trump, but added the company remains on track. “I encourage people to look beyond the bumps and potholes of the road immediately ahead of us,” Musk said. “Lift your gaze to the bright shining citadel on the hill — I don’t know, some Reagan-esque imagery — and that’s where we’re headed.” Protests targeting Musk and Tesla escalated in March, with some charging stations vandalized and set ablaze.
